Breandán Ó Madagáin
has made a speciality of the interdisciplinary study of Irish and music. He is well positioned to do so, being professor of Irish in the National University of Ireland, Galway, 1975-97, and previously a lecturer in the Irish department in University College, Dublin, 1966-75; he has had a life-long interest in music, being a student for many years in the National College of Music, Dublin, and later drawing on the international scholarship of ethnomusicology.
Breandán is a member of the Royal Irish Academy, and Chairman, 1995-2005, of the Board of Celtic Studies in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.
His book, ‘Caointe agus Seancheolte Eile - Keening and Other Old Irish Musics’, which includes an audio CD of him demonstrating the songs, was published in 2005.
